Suzanne Patles of the Mi'kmaq Warriors Society will be speaking in Kitchener-Waterloo as part of a national tour to raise awareness about the struggle at Elsipogtog against shale gas fracking, their ongoing assertion and exercise of nationhood, and the repression they face from police and courts.

A months-long blockade in opposition to shale gas fracking by SWN at Elsipogtog First Nation (located in Kent County, New Brunswick) came to national attention on October 17, 2013 when the blockade was violently attacked and dismantled by dozens of RCMP officers armed with assault rifles, pepper spray and K-9 units.

Forty members of the blockade were arrested, and a number of members of the Mi'kmaq Warriors Society face charges. All funds raised during the tour will go towards legal support.

Don’t miss this opportunity to hear about the Mi'kmaq Warriors Society’s struggle in their own words, and to draw connections between resistance movements in the east and here in Ontario, where indigenous communities and environmental justice activists have been fighting against pipeline infrastructure and the introduction of fracking.

“Our warriors are still being mistreated in the system, justice for our political prisoners of war.”

- Suzanne Patles, member of the Mi’kmaq Warrior Society
